Backstory: Viktor Berezin was born in Yekaterinburg, Russia, on July 24th, 1981. He was raised with his mother, Alisa, and his father, Vlad. However, in 1985, his mother died giving birth to his brother, Boris. For this, he always had a small amount of hatred towards his brother. The Berezin family has had a past of military careers, so Viktor and Boris were next in line. Their father was a retired Lieutenant in the Soviet Army, and decided it would be best to give them a head start. He began to train and educate his sons when Viktor was twelve and his brother was eight. After ten years, they were ready in their father's eyes, and enlisted on February 12, 2003. They went through basic training and, with their father's recommendation, were transferred to Spetsnaz, where Viktor was the given the rank Lance-Corporal and assigned to be a machine gunner.
Though Boris and Viktor went through military training together, Viktor was assigned to be sent deeper into the Zone, while Boris was ordered to guard the border. Viktor's first assignment was to guard a convoy coming from the main operating base to the FOB. He was in a squad with Lance-Corporal Alexei Antonov, Sergeant Vistin, and Corporal Annikov. However, the convoy was ambushed by a group of bandits that obtained military grade weapons. As Viktor and his squad ran for a ditch, they were met by gunfire, and due to the weight from his MG and ammo, Viktor lagged behind and was hit in the back by three 7.62x39 bullets. Though his Kevlar took most of the impact, one of the bullets still got lodged into his back and he eventually passed out from blood loss. As he awoke, he found six UKM Soldiers dead in the ditch, one Ural-4320 in flames, and a doctor, taking out the bullet lodged into his back and closing his wound. He never caught the doctor's name, possibly because he was barely awake, but he did hear something along the lines of, "Hello...Doctor...May call me..." The doctor brought him back to a town and gave him a anorak, saying that not everyone is a fan of the UKM. However, he was told of a group called 'Duty' whom consisted of people like himself and they were based in the town. Though he felt betrayed by his comrades for leaving him, his orders were still to be followed, abolish the zone's existence.
